# Importing Tokens

## Overview

The "Importing Tokens" guide provides a step-by-step process for bringing your existing Style Dictionary tokens into Knapsack, making it easy to manage and integrate them within your design system. This guide covers everything from exporting your tokens to uploading them into Knapsack's Token Importer.

#### Step 1: Open the Tokens Dashboard

Within the Tokens Dashboard, locate and click on the "Import Tokens" button. If you don't have any tokens in your workspace yet, you can also find the "Import Tokens" option prominently displayed on the main screen.

#### Step 2: Attach your Style Dictionary JSON

Import tokens formatted according to Style Dictionary, enabling seamless integration with various platforms. Drag and drop the file to the uploader region.

#### Step 3: Choose to Replace or Merge Tokens

By default, Knapsack will merge your imported tokens with any existing tokens in your workspace. However, if you prefer to start fresh, you can opt to replace all existing tokens with the contents of your uploaded JSON file. This flexibility allows you to either build upon your existing token set or completely overhaul it based on your current needs.

#### Step 4: Import Tokens

After configuring the import click the blue "Import Tokens" button.

## Conclusion

By following these steps, you can seamlessly import your existing design tokens into Knapsack, ensuring they are effectively managed and utilized within your design system.
